What many people lack to see is the kind of qualities a leader must possess. Sadly, it is not just being able to give commands and be in charge, but also to make the tough choices. Many leaders have to be ready to have all the responsibility on their shoulders. All teams with together, but ultimately if the team fails, it's the leader that gets the most blame. The leader must always be ready to "take a bullet for the team" at any moment. A leader must also be ready to take action, but make sure not to have any second thoughts. Leaders have to know that nobody should be left behind in the group. They don't always succeed and when they don't, they have to know to continue on. Leaders have to be strong and should have the trust of their team members. Sadly leaders don't always make the way call, but the do have to make the right one.
A leader is defined as the principal player in a group. The one who is takes on the responsibility to maintain supervision of other individuals and ensure their success. A leader does not only look to serve himself, but others as well. It has been found that a leader incorporates some generic aspects, such as: showing respect to those around you voluntarily, communicate to your audience effectively, being generous, being humble, having the ability to show your passion, being decisive, and showing courage in times of conflict. These qualities are what makes a whole group of individuals want to follow an individual. It is the fact that a leader is selfless, though not entirely unselfish (as in not removing oneself entirely from the equation), and being able to manage a goal that satisfies everyone. A leader takes hold of the situation and tires to make it better. They are willing to put the time and effort for what they believe, and not withhold that belief, but also know how to manage tolerance with others. Leaders are individuals who were able to make an impact with another person, and form a relation by their similar wants and ideas. Leaders are made by the people, they do not become a leader on their own. It is by expressing to the people their desires that you find a movement or cause to take on, and have the individual who will support you in the tough times.
Warren Bennis once said, “Leadership is the capacity to translate vision in reality.” A leader does exactly that, but without the necessary qualifications and characteristics, leadership is impossible. All leaders worthy of being titled leaders have their ability to be proactive and reactive, flexible, a good communicator, resourceful, respectful, confident, and open minded to thank for their success. Without these qualities, achieving their goal productively becomes nearly impossible. The key to being a good leader, is simply holding this characteristics. An effective leader always holds a high value to knowing his/her environment in order to avoid conflict before one occurs. While knowing their own environment, they also adapt well in uncomfortable situations and learn to adapt to keep up productivity no matter the circumstances. As a leader, one must listen...a lot! A leader must be willing to work to understand the needs and desires of others. A good leader asks many questions, considers all options, and leads in the right direction. While assisting others, leaders lead with humble respect. This is the key to a leader earning respect as well. Another significant quality is the leaders ability to be resourceful by utilizing the resources available to them. If they don't know the answer to something, they find out by asking questions. A leader must create access to information. While managing resourcefulness and the other characteristics, a leader also takes into account all points of view and will be willing to change a policy, program, cultural tradition that is out-dated, or no longer beneficial to the group as a whole. It doesn’t take a lot to be a leader but it isn’t something you’re born into. To be a leader, you must acquire the necessary characteristics.
